Honami is the emotional core of reminiscence

The Irregular at Magic High School: Reminiscence Arc introduces a new supporting character, Honami Sakurai, who is the emotional core of the story.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Irregular at Magic High School, “Reminiscence Arc,” now airing on Funimation and Crunchyroll.

Magic is a force that exists in the world of The Irregular at Magic High School, but only a small handful of people are able to use it to manipulate matter as magicians. Although magic is something a person must be born with, people can also become augmented magicians through genetic manipulation and a magical equation. One of those characters is Minami Sakurai, who is a second generation augmented magician from the Sakura series. She is also linked to a first generation augmented magician named Honami Sakurai.

While Honami only appears in “The Arc of Reminiscence” by The Irregular at Magic High School, she is still an important character whose actions during the events of this story have helped shape the current timeline of the series. As well as having an important role in a major battle, he is also the character who raises important questions about the status quo of augmented magicians which almost parallels that of the replicants of the Blade Runner franchise. Although she is a secondary character, she is the emotional core of the story.

Honami is featured in “Reminiscence Arc” as the bodyguard of Miya Yotsuba, who at the time was the leader of the Yotsuba clan. While Miya is on vacation in Okinawa with her daughter Miyuki and son Tatsuya (who is also treated as a bodyguard), Honami performs similar functions to her niece in the present and uses many of the same powers. Like Minami, Honami also takes care of the housework, escorting Miya and her children to various places and keeping them safe from harm. While Honami is loyal to her owner and Miya actually treats her kindly, Honami is also aware that she is no different from a slave.

After escorting Miyuki and Tatsuya to a car on their way to dinner, Honami takes a moment for herself not only to think about her place in the world, but also Tatsuya, who she can relate to. . Although Tatsuya is a member of the Yotsuba clan by blood, the fact that he was born “a deficient magician” – in his mother’s words – caused him to be demoted to a status similar to Honami herself, which she thinks she is wrong. Although Honami is completely unaware at this point that Tatsuya also saw his powers augmented by his mother and aunt when he was younger, Honami is still right to be horrified by his dehumanization.

When Honami learns the truth about Tatsuya’s powers, she decides to come to his aid during an attack on Okinawa by the Great Asian Union. Not only does she risk further shortening her lifespan to secure victory for Tatsuya and the Okinawa Naval Base, but she even hints that she wants to bring about her own demise. She ends up confirming this when Tatsuya tries to save her life a second time (having resuscitated her in a previous attack) and she stops him. Explaining his decision, Honami confides the truth of his existence to Tatsuya.

Starting with the fact that she was purchased by the Yotsuba clan even before she was born, Honami was always aware that she would never be in control of her own life. As an augmented magician who was a bioengineer with a very short lifespan to serve Miya Yotsuba, she was deprived of many life experiences that others can enjoy, and something about it made her deeply unhappy. Rather than continue to exist as an instrument for someone else’s use, Honami rationalized that if she couldn’t control her own life, then she wanted to at least control her own death.

Specifically, Honami wanted to die as a human who made a heroic decision that was not informed by his sense of duty to someone else. She wanted to fight for what she believed in and have her wishes honored like any other human. In addition to being commemorated, Honami requested that his cremated remains be scattered in the ocean as a final symbol of freedom.
