19-year-old arrested after Enumclaw school district closures

The Black Diamond resident was arrested with throwing stars, a BB gun and a compound bow with an arrow.

3:43 p.m. UPDATE: The Enumclaw Police Department has released information about the young man who caused the modified lockdown of four local schools.

Police say a 911 call was made at 11:51 a.m. reporting an unnamed 19-year-old Black Diamond resident riding a motorcycle to Enumclaw High and carrying a bow and arrow.

As officers searched the area, more 911 calls came in to report a motorcycle being driven recklessly in and around town; the motorcycle even passed officers three times, but officers were “unable to pursue the fleeing motorcycle,” read a press release, citing state car chase law.

The 2021 Legislature passed HB 1054, which prohibits officers from pursuing vehicles unless officers have probable cause to suspect a driver has committed a violent, sexual, evasion, or DUI offense.

Witnesses saw the teenager hiding near the SE 472nd and 268th Ave SE intersection near Mount Peak. When officers arrived, they found him hiding in a shed.

During his arrest, officers took possession of throwing stars, a ball gun that looked like a semi-automatic pistol, and a compound bow with a broad-tipped arrow.

“He admitted to using drugs all day, but did not provide anything further regarding his behavior or his motive,” the press release read.

The teenager was convicted on multiple counts including DUI, disrupting a school, possession of dangerous weapons in school facilities and reckless endangerment.

“The Enumclaw Police Department would like to thank the community for their assistance in this investigation and is grateful for the partnership with the Enumclaw School District and the Washington State Patrol,” the statement concluded.

2:30 p.m. UPDATE: All blockages have been lifted.

1:45 PM UPDATE: It appears that one person has been arrested in connection with the investigation related to the recent Enucmlaw School District blockades, according to reports from the police scanner.

ORIGINAL POSITION: The Enumclaw School District recently placed Enumclaw High, Enumclaw Middle School, Southwod Elementary and Sunrise Elementary in a modified lockdown due to an unreported threat.

A message on the ESD’s main website says law enforcement is responding, although it’s unclear where – a Courier-Herald reporter confirmed no police presence at the school as of 1 p.m. .

“During a modified lockdown, no one is allowed in or out of the building. Additional information will be shared when known,” the post read. “We understand that this information is of concern to our parents, however, the safety of the student is the priority at this time.”

This is an ongoing story and will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
